When you go on a whim to the tiny museum in Saffron Walden, find a Greek vase with the worst haircut in Greek ceramic history, and are told the SOLE interesting Roman object on its website, this gladiator, is IN STORAGE. Have they not heard of Ridley Scott? Wake up Curators!!!

Another choose the cover. I assume the Getty credit will disappear. I like the lettering on the green one and the water-clock (which is the whole point) is clearer on that one. But the white one has better clarity on the humans. Thoughts? The hive mind here is always right!

On #WorldSparrowDay, a mosaic from Italica north of Seville and a fresco from Oplontis, Campania. It's also the birthday of the poet of Ovid, inconveniently not the Roman poet who did write a poem about a sparrow--Catullus.

A very enjoyable evening with @edithmayhall and the The Classical Association! Thank you for the thoughtful discussion of the bio-political subconscious of the epic tradition - I can't wait to read more in my signed copy!

Arlene and Edith are two powerhouses of classics, especially bringing it to people who haven’t previously had access to it. This is an incredible project of theirs - I’m thrilled it’s going so well! theguardian.com/society/2025/a…
