Remembering the Welsh character actor #NauntonWayne who was #BOTD in 1901. Together with Basil Radford they created Charters and Caldicott, the upper-crust, cricket obsessed gentlemen characters that appeared in a selection of films.

Happy #PublicationDay to July's #CrimeClassic - ‘The Wheel Spins’ by Ethel Lina White! First published in 1936 (and adapted for the screen as 'The Lady Vanishes' by Alfred Hitchcock), it remains her best-known novel, worthy of acknowledgement as a classic of the genre. 🕵️

'The Lady Vanishes' was made in 1938 in a tiny, shabby and inadequate studio in Islington. There was no outside shooting. This lovely film shows that technology is secondary: all you need is a good screenplay, a competent cinematographer, a fine cast and a genius of a director.

#AshesOldTraffordTest Hitchcock's 'The Lady Vanishes', in 1938, set the scene for 85 years on. The ghosts of Charters & Caldicott have now witnessed yet more agonizing disappointment.

dave ainsworth I particularly admire his film work as part of a double act with Basil Radford: ‘Charters and Caldicott’, a pair of quintessentially British cricket-loving gentleman.
