We have had a month of great conditions for prescribed fire in Northern California. Why haven't we burned tens or hundreds of thousands of acres during this time? What are we waiting for? Our communities can't wait. We need to get on it.

This week, The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Division of Fire began to apply prescribed fire to 167-acres of their cultural landscape within the exterior boundaries of the Flathead Indian Reservation, to begin their spring 2022 prescribed burn season.

Big bro sent me some pictures from his work the last few days in MO. They’re doing 3,000+ acres of mostly habitat with just a few dozen people. Amazing what you can accomplish with a decent burn window, a legacy of active management, and agency to put good fire on the ground.

New on The Lookout YouTube channel, a conversation with #EchoLake local Junet Bedayn about the #CaldorFire's landscape-scale effects on forests, and our current inability to manage forest wildfire fuels at any sort of meaningful scale. youtu.be/71Y5VCkG78Q #SLT #cafires /1

2 burn days in a row, and they couldn't have been more different. Today's burn was started using a hand-drill, led by Maidu people, and tended by children - part of the land-tending curriculum at the Buckeye Gathering, an ancestral skills family camp. Fire is the best teacher.

On NPR yesterday, @MatthewHurteau did a great job explaining the value of prescribed fire in the context of the #hermitspeakfire - caused by an escaped US Forest Service prescribed fire. We need to communicate, especially at times like this, about the value and risks of #goodfire. A thread.

Rather than comment on the Forest Service’s halt to prescribed fire from a policy perspective, I will be posting pictures of the many successful, life renewing, and restorative burns I have participated in. Fire is how we heal our land and communities. Reply with yours too!

Could you help this indigenous candidate get 100 more followers today? I'm running for U.S. House here in the belly of the beast (Wyoming) taking on big settler fossil fuel oligarchs!

Just once I would like to hear forest management and fire resilience work described with an analogy from childrearing, gardening or husbandry instead of shooting rockets into space

Last month (November 2022) for the first time in "postcolonial" Boston history, the Massachusett tribe hosted a mishoon camp with allies from neighboring Nipmuc and Wampanoag tribes. What is a mishoon and why is this so important? Keep reading... /1

Why you, regardless of where you are and what you do, should care and be outraged about this situation occurring at a small CSU in Northern California, Chico State: This kind of thing is pervasive in academia and science. 1/🧵

Such a treat to see and share visions of prescribed fire with others who love it. No two fires are the same, and this calendar captures that beautifully...
