Today the Oversight Board selected a new case related to a FB video of #Cambodia's prime minister giving a speech before the 2023 election. This case involves potentially violent speech from a political leader and will allow us to review how Meta balances safety and voice.

Today we call on Meta to continue to adopt more rigorous scrutiny in addressing health-related misinformation as #COVID-19 pandemic evolves. We also urge the company to publish a review of the impact of algorithms and amplification on harmful health misinformation.

In July 2022, the Board accepted a request from Meta to assess whether it should continue to remove certain categories of COVID-19 misinformation, or whether a less restrictive approach would better align with its values and human rights responsibilities. x.com/OversightBoard…

The Board finds that continuing to remove COVID-19 misinformation that is “likely to directly contribute to the risk of imminent physical harm” during a global public health emergency is consistent with Meta’s values and human rights responsibilities.

The Board recommends that Meta supports independent research and promotes understanding of COVID-19 misinformation. Meta should continue to make research tools available, while improving their accessibility, and allowing external researchers to access data that is not public.

Today the Board upheld Meta's decision to leave up with a warning screen a FB post that included a video depicting identifiable prisoners of war. Meta should develop a protocol for preserving and sharing evidence of human rights violations with appropriate authorities.

Meta is in a unique position to assist in the preservation of evidence that may be of relevance in prosecuting international crimes. The Board recommends that Meta create a protocol to preserve and share evidence of human rights abuses with relevant authorities.
