Check out our new yearly GDP and population estimates for Spain 1277-1850 just published in Cliometrica. Spain was a frontier economy for centuries and was among the richest countries in Europe in the late 16th century. The empire implied losing that position, not acquiring it.

The economic historian Pedro Lains passed away today. He was still middle-aged. I often had lunch with him in Lisbon and it's weird to think that he won't be around anymore. He was preparing a three-volume edited book about Iberian Economic History. R.I.P. observador.pt/2021/05/16/mor…

With Blanca Sanchez-Alonso, this is our view on the loss of human capital after the Spanish Civil War. Political exiles to Mexico were not just biased towards the intellectual elites, they also represented the elites within each one of the social classes of Spain. direct.mit.edu/jinh/article/5…

Carlos Santiago Caballero (@carlos_sancab) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Some results: 1) Instead of making Spain rich, the empire was the ruin of a previously prosperous society. 2) Methodologically, we prove that using a demand approach to estimate historical national accounts is a reasonable approach in the absence of more direct sources.

My view on the marriage market in 19th C. Spain: 1) More services and manufacturing improved the bargaining power of grooms when choosing whom to marry. 2) Not in the elites, where the market was entirely dominated by the social status of the families. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
