Back in 2019 I met lovely Echo the therapy dog when he began work in ⁦St.Gerard's Belfast⁩ Today I was back and Echo is fully grown, still lovely and still hard at work! I’ll have a report on some brilliant new work by the pupils there for ⁦BBC News NI⁩ soon! #education

📚 World Book Day 📚 Today our boys and girls celebrated our love of reading with some wonderful costumes and activities. Big thanks to Dave and the gang at @NOALIBISBOOKS for ensuring every child went home with their own book today 💫

Blog post 3 of 3 on Explicit Spelling Instruction is live! It covers a lot of ground (I bit off more than I could chew trying to get so much into one post 😬😅) but, hopefully, it has a lot to offer. RTs appreciated 🙌 ryonleyshon.wordpress.com/2024/12/08/ali…

Fresh FREE resources added to the folder! These focus on reinforcing some of the more complex consonant sound-spelling correspondences, encouraging children to hone in on positional orthographic tendencies (which spelling is more likely where). Samples of new content in thread👇

The format is the same as with the previous resources I’ve shared (remember - using familiar routines and resources lowers cognitive load allowing for more focus on the task itself), starting with grapheme-focused sheets:

Then, there are sound sort activities (most with red herring ‘imposters’ - which share the grapheme but not the phoneme -to ensure children are engaging with the phonology as well as the orthography) to help children notice positional orthographic tendencies:

After that, you will find context-based, missing word activities to ensure that meaning is being connected to the orthography and phonology, whilst again allowing more practise opportunities with spellings:

Children will hopefully have internalised any useful orthographic tendencies and had enough practise with spellings to be able to recall the focus grapheme for a selection of the spellings in isolation with this final activity (I get children to check, cover and write here too):

Here’s the link to these and all the rest of the resources: x.com/ryonwleyshon/s… (I’ve only made these today - yes they took ALL day 🙃😅 - so they are untested and unchecked at this stage. Please let me know if you spot any errors!)
