The Wollemi pine is a critically endangered tree, previously thought to be extinct. BMWHI Founder Dr John Merson presented research by Dr Ian Wright Ian Wright and Holly Nettle to the BM City Council Councillors last month. We are now working with the BMCC to deepen our understanding of hydrological impacts and solutions in the area. bit.ly/43dYYUG

On national Platypus month, we pay tribute to the ones who hide away in the lakes of the Blue Mountains.‘Platypus’ derives from the Greek word for “flat footed”, as it uses its knuckles to walk on land to protect its webbed feet. Photo credit: walkmyworld.com

They appear to defy rules of physics in their existence. Unique land cover results in water being directed such that vegetation grows on the sides of the mountains. Over millennia, the vegetation decomposes and creates nutrient rich peat, which serves as a foundation for swamps.
