Hi there, I wrote this piece for TheJournal.ie on why I'm voting No in the #CareRef this Friday and why this is so important. If you are undecided or feel confused by the discourse - as many have said they are - please give it a read. Thanks thejournal.ie/readme/orla-tiโฆ
We are disappointed by HSE Ireland's decision to stop increasing targets on breastfeeding. Our research shows that the required lactation support within healthcare settings is still not universally available. We worry that by removing targets, there will be less focus on support.

There is a concerning disconnect between what women are saying they experience in Irish maternity services and what providers say is happening to women. Medical gaslighting is adding to womenโs birth trauma. WeMidwives ๐๐ youtu.be/eDdh6JiOetM?siโฆ
Congratulations Maria Velo Midwife on your publication. #freebirth while being a choice some women will.always make often reflects a healthcare system that is broken and does not support a well resourced and supportive #homebirth service. Where to go now to better support these women?
I host a monthly VBAC chat online. Women are sharing disturbing experiences of obstetric care in some Irish maternity units. โItโs a cruel systemโ one mother stated referring to the constant wearing down of her autonomy and confidence at each antenatal appointment. WeMidwives ๐๐
Shout out to all the midwives going to bat for women in Ireland navigating birth options - youโre a beacon of hope โฅ๏ธ Thank you! WeMidwives ๐๐
One positive aspect of Lisaโs experience was the availability of the mobile epidural in The Coombe Hospital. But the The Rotunda Hospital say itโs too much trouble for their staffโฆI hope women will vote with their feet and choose the hospital that best aligns with mumโs preferences.
Not entirely surprising - is this a regional issue? How can GPs be so out of touch with the evidence? Women considering attending Cavan MLU were also being advised against midwife led care by GPs. #vbac WeMidwives ๐๐
#Mindfulness has been shown to support mental health + reduce the overwhelm that is often part of the early breastfeeding journey. Why wait until women show signs of depression? Why not incorporate mindfulness as part of breastfeeding education antenatally? WeMidwives ๐๐
