14 February 1477. Margery Brews called John Paston, her fiancé, in a letter: “My olde Valentine.” This is regarded as the oldest surviving UK St Valentine’s Day message. The letter comes from the Paston letters, one of the largest collections of 15th century English letters.

15 February 1942. Japanese forces captured Singapore. British General, Arthur Percival, surrendered unconditionally and 80,000 British Empire forces became POWs. The British capitulation came just 7 days after Japanese troops had first stormed the island.

15 February 1971. Decimalisation of British coinage was completed on what was called “Decimal Day”. Before this date, the British pound was made up of 20 shillings and a total of 240 pennies. With decimalisation, the pound was subdivided into 100 “new pence”.
