14 February is The Feast Day of St. Valentine, the patron saint of lovers. In fact, there were 14 different Saint Valentines in ancient Rome.

14 February 1477. Margery Brews called John Paston, her fiancé, in a letter: “My olde Valentine.” This is regarded as the oldest surviving UK St Valentine’s Day message. The letter comes from the Paston letters, one of the largest collections of 15th century English letters.

Yorkshire-born Liberal politician Herbert Asquith died on this day 1928, aged 75. Born in Morley to a nonconformist family, moved to London at age 11. Prime minister 1908-16, introduced old age pensions, free school meals, reduced the power of the House of Lords.

15 February 1564. Galileo Galilei, who played a major role in the scientific revolution, was born in Pisa, Italy. He used the telescope for scientific observations of Venus, the 4 largest moons of Jupiter, the observation of Saturn’s rings and the analysis of sunspots.

15 February 1928. Herbert Asquith died (aged 75). He was the UK Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916 and last to lead a majority Liberal government. His government introduced old age pensions, sickness and unemployment benefits and reduced the power of the House of Lords.

15 February 1933. US President Elect Franklin D Roosevelt escaped unhurt after an assassination attempt in Miami, Florida, USA. Unemployed brick layer, Giuseppe Zangara, fired 6 shots at the car carrying Roosevelt, killing Chicago mayor Anton Cermak and wounding 4 others.

15 February 1942. Japanese forces captured Singapore. British General, Arthur Percival, surrendered unconditionally and 80,000 British Empire forces became POWs. The British capitulation came just 7 days after Japanese troops had first stormed the island.

15 February 1965. The Beatles recorded their 9th UK single: Ticket To Ride at Abbey Road Studios. It went to No 1 in the UK and USA. John Lennon rated it as one of the best Lennon & McCartney songs with George Harrison introducing a completely new guitar sound.

15 February 1971. Decimalisation of British coinage was completed on what was called “Decimal Day”. Before this date, the British pound was made up of 20 shillings and a total of 240 pennies. With decimalisation, the pound was subdivided into 100 “new pence”.

A series of public information films, produced by the Decimal Currency Board for Decimal Day was called Decimal 5 and which included The Scaffold’s catchy jingle, One Pound is 100 New Pence.
