Late to this essay, but I've tracked congressional races professionally for 15 years and agree that banning party primaries (as a few states have done) is the only realistic way to disincentivize extremism. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

I missed this thread yesterday but mostly agree with it. I think the risk of Republicans throwing the US into a crisis by failing to certify election results has greatly increased from 2020 and is now a very credible threat. But HR1 is a pretty indirect response to that threat.

GOP rigging next decade of elections through gerrymandering: -Control 80% of US House seats in OH where Trump got 53% -71-78% seats in NC where Trump got 49.9% -64% of seats in GA where Biden got 49.5% Dems running out of time to stop this motherjones.com/politics/2021/…

Republican gerrymandering efforts: • Dilute minority votes • Neglect rural and urban Kansans needs • Lack transparency Kansans have been abundantly clear: Keep the cores of WyCo and JoCo intact and ensure fair representation for ALL Kansans #ksleg

Reasonable people can disagree about the best policy going forward, about how well Biden has handled the crisis, about NATO expansion etc., but there can be no mistaking which side in this conflict represents basic decency and which represents a cynical and brutal lust for power

A short time before Russia began its invasion, Biden's predecessor praised Putin for doing what he wants and paying very little for it.

2/ Tonight, the entire Post World War international order sits on a knife edge. If Putin does not pay a devastating price for this transgression, then our own security will soon be at risk.

"There is no purgatory for war criminals. They go straight to hell," Ukraine ambassador to UN says. Russian ambassador attacks the "junta" in Kyiv and quickly adjourns the meeting.

Ok, after years of warnings were ignored and hearing "Garry, you were right!" all damn day today, I'll repeat what I said in 2014: Stop telling me I was right and listen to what I'm saying now. My recommendations follow: 1/5

Russia is pushing Finland closer to @nato membership. Vloser than ever before. Our security has been partially based on an option to join. At this rate we have no other option but to join. Finland’s accession would strengthen the Alliance and help keep Northern Europe stable.

It's legitimately perplexing that Democrats don't take action on an issue that polls this well. Maybe a reflection of the fact that support for marijuana legalization varies by age and party leaders are mostly old boomers.

Raskin: Trump on more than 20 different occasions defended the performance of the Chinese government in terms of COVID.. so if there is a problem with the Chinese government unleashing the virus.. you would have to pin that on your favorite President Donald Trump not Joe Biden

To be clear, Hochul’s proposal isn’t that *she* should be able to build an apartment on the adjacent lot — it’s that the person who owns the lot should be allowed to do that if they want to. Freedom! Property rights! It’s good stuff.

Very grim that Trump’s rivals in the GOP have positioned him as the sensible moderate in the field running against a bunch of fanatics and ideologues.

The guy is, like, a total scumbag and all around piece of shit. It should be possible to articulate some criticism of him that isn’t just “I’m to his right on every topic.” slowboring.com/p/the-orange-m…
