“No rescuers came for two days after the earthquake,” a Sagaing local said. “During that time we could hear the children screaming for help. With the help of the monks and nuns, we dug as much as we could with our bare hands, but we couldn’t do anything. All the children died.”

“The authorities came and said we need to move because we are creating bad views in the city,” said a municipal staffer living with his family on a field in a flimsy shack. “We have to return near our building which has totally collapsed, and will have to build our own shelters.”
