Last week artist Lauren Strohacker projected images of borderlands wildlife harmed by border policies on the wall in Nogales, Ariz. The images capture the beauty and cruelty present in the borderlands.

Grateful to Will Szal, whose heartfelt review of CROSSINGS tugs on all the threads I hoped readers would pull on—and plumbs some ideas I didn't consciously include. (My intent wasn't necessarily to convert anyone to Animism, but I'm glad Will went there!)

'Many of the (San Luis Valley's) rangelands are in a bad state — their springs running dry, native grasses depleted, and allotment boundaries violated by trespassing ranchers.'

A couple neat slides from a webinar tonight by Julia Kintsch, #roadecology maven in Colorado:
1) constructed brushpile designed to provide cover for small mammals and herpetofauna as they move through an underpass, w/ 'photo booth' to capture animal usage;
2) weasel!
Important new report via Wildlands Network & National Caucus of Environmental Legislators on habitat connectivity legislation. Key takeaway is just how hot this topic has become: 66 bills supporting wildlife x-ings and other forms of connectivity have passed since 2019 alone! #roadecology

Every time I see a squirrel scampering across the street or a Mallard mom with multiple ducklings all huddled together as they cross a very busy street (this morning - and they made it), I think of Ben Goldfarb's excellent book, Crossings. Learned abt Mike Dombeck, too.👏
At risk of posing a question that's been asked many times before: Who are Twitter's must-follow accounts in the realms of fish ecology, biology, physiology, cultural studies, etc.?
(FYI you're not allowed to say Dr. Solomon David, Matthew L. Miller, or Dr. David Shiffman 🦈.)
I'm looking to develop some feature story ideas for Hakai Magazine. If you're a scientist or activist or coastal citizen with a great story that hasn't been well-covered, DM me. I'd love to chat.
Big #roadecology news out of New York, where both senate and assembly have passed the NY Wildlife Crossings Act, which would direct DOT to assess the state's roadways for potential passages. Should help NY get some of that sweet federal infra funding!

A roadkilled Wilson's warbler, laid to rest in a riparian area along the Arkansas River. #roadecology
