Congrats to UMN Institute of Child Development's Ekom Eyoh for receiving a microgrant from the First-Gen Institute. The leadership of NextGen Psych Scholars Program continues to grow pathways for underrepresented students to pursue a graduate degree in psychology. #umnproud

I think the NSF GRFP excludes many diverse & underrepresented scholars by disqualifying those with Masters. Attaining a PhD requires resources and privileges that many may not have access to straight outta undergrad. I remember feeling surprised when I learned about this rule.

In a recent study, researchers highlight the benefits of a culturally sensitive afterschool program for Latine immigrant youth. The youth noted that the program benefited them socially, culturally, and psychologically. These spaces are crucial for our immigrant youth.

🚨 In a new article with my UMN Psychology colleagues, we found that police intrusion (e.g., racial slurs, stop-and-frisks), which on average occurred at age 13, was associated with more epigenetic age acceleration at age-15, controlling for age-9 epigenetic age acceleration.

This award means a lot to me, especially in today’s political climate. Inspiration for the work I do comes from envisioning a childhood that everyone deserves: Freedom to express themselves without the fear of being negatively stereotyped, excluded, or hurt.
