This Māori Language Week we are celebrating te reo Māori in a new and exciting way. We want to grow 1 million speakers by 2040 and we want to start in 2020: even if just for a moment.

40 years ago Keri Kaa helped lead the Māori Language Week protest march that called for te reo to be an official language. We honour her legacy with her favourite colour. Moe mai rā e te kōkā. 💜

A fearless trailblazer who refused to accept that te reo Māori had no mana or application in modern Aotearoa. Our tribute is on behalf of future generations of New Zealanders who, thanks to her refusal to accept things as they were, will grow up in a world where te reo is normal
