“In policing, people always talk about “bad apples.” Well, bad apples come from rotten trees—law enforcement agencies imbued with structural racism.” Read my latest article at Brookings Governance about #GeorgeFloyd #ChristianCooper #protests The Brookings Institution brookings.edu/blog/up-front/…

This! 👇🏾 It’s unfathomable that during a season encompassing a pandemic, nationwide protests and an election, The Baltimore Sun has *furloughed* reporters. I can’t even wrap my brain around that. (But to Alec MacGillis’ point, amazing job Jessica Anderson! TY for telling Aaron’s story!)

Trump visits the coronavirus swab production line in Maine, without a mask, and the manufacturer says it will now have to throw away the day’s output. usatoday.com/story/news/pol…

@gregggonsalves Michael Brendan Dougherty Matt Stoller James Surowiecki Yeah, here's me in April, 7. "Closing the parks is ineffective pandemic theater." theatlantic.com/health/archive… We're agreeing that messaging wasn't always great, but public health as a field really is very used to harm-reduction frameworks. Authorities and media, not so much.

@gregggonsalves Michael Brendan Dougherty Matt Stoller James Surowiecki Julia Marcus, PhD, MPH Dr Ellie Murray, ScD Michael, again: harm reduction really is a solid framework in public health; people on this thread tried hard. But authorities do this a lot, partly because they are authorities or they get on morality/shaming horses (safe sex vs abstinence, drug criminalization vs treatment.)

Bill Hanage @BillHanage.bsky.social Zoë McLaren, Ph.D. Look at this new preprint. They find, quite unsurprisingly, that masks *increase* distancing. I've been arguing this for months based on social science evidence! This is what you'd expect, not false sense of security nonsense. But all this was disregarded. arxiv.org/pdf/2005.12446…

zeynep tufekci Julia Marcus, PhD, MPH @gregggonsalves James Surowiecki Michael Brendan Dougherty It’s important to remember there were so so many other epi & public health misinformation issues related to COVID that had to be countered too. Don’t drink bleach; masks don’t mean you can stop social distancing; anti-malarial drugs aren’t a magic cure-all...we had to prioritize.

This is excellent. If you or your loved ones are at risk or the crowds look too crowded, it is an ethical humane and politically conscious act for you to stay home. And bring a box of masks and hand sanitizer if you go!

Avi Zenilman (@avizenilman) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Troubling that an industry built on monitoring everyone’s every move in a windowless space isn’t providing everyone with masks and requiring them to wear them?

How can anyone watch “The Wire” and the dysfunction of the police & the war on drugs and say that we were depicted as heroic. We demonstrated moral ambiguities and the pathology that leads to the abuses. Maybe you were reacting to how good people can be corrupted to do bad things

Louise Aronson The Nocturnists Moderna Paula Span JoNel Aleccia So agree. Troubling that we are seeing these age exclusions—which have been long-standing in the clinical trial world—but even here when our target prevention and treatment group must focus on the 70-85 yo age group. Takes time and expertise to enroll. Work w/geriatrics

Having turned 36 in April, @CouncilPresBMS will presumably be the youngest mayor in Baltimore City history (3 months younger than Martin O'Malley when he won in 1999).

“The RNC has indicated it does not want to require participants to wear masks for the speech.” Why does RNC have a view on this? CDC says masks prevent spread. Is RNC against that? These are life and death issues that require responsible communication washingtonpost.com/health/2020/06…

Many institutions, including mine, are freezing or limiting 401(k), 403(B)+similar contributions. We're leaving serious dollars on the table by not offering employees the option to take the same dollar-reduction in direct salary and to leave these tax-preferred items intact.
