'I read [it] like a besotted child, enraptured, never wanting it to end' RUTH OZEKI Mina's Matchbox by Yoko Ogawa, translated by Stephen Snyder, is out today. A beautiful, evocative novel set in 1970s Japan, about how one year changes a young girl's life.

Just finished "The Memory Police" by Yoko Ogawa. It's a quiet story of a small group of people on a mysterious island suffering the gradual disappearance of objects, and their memories, from flowers to ships to... all enforced by the ominous Memory Police. Haunting.

Yuko Tsushima taught me motherhood, Banana Yoshimoto helped me thru grief, Mieko Kawakami showed me the depth of loneliness, Sayaka Murata explored alienation that I can relate, Nastuko Imamura taught me being different is okay, Yoko Ogawa let me embrace the childhood's innocence

6. If you prefer fiction, do read "The Housekeeper and the Professor" by Author Yōko Ogawa, a lovely novel about a professor who forgets everything but the magic of numbers.
