ComCam is back on Rubin Observatory Simonyi telescope. Initial (engineering) on-sky observations are scheduled for July 2024. Though covering <5% of the area of the main camera, ComCam is still sizable: approximately 40' x 40' field of view spread over 9 CCDs and 144 megapixels.

As more and more satellites are launched, there are more and more "places to hide" in space. So the job of Space Domain Awareness is becoming a question of how fast can we scale.

I remember hearing about this asteroid impact from chatter on Twitter that night! Our goal instead is to have many years of warning so we can easily prevent asteroid impacts.

A heartfelt thanks to Google Cloud for providing the compute resources for the Asteroid Institute to discover 10s of thousands of asteroids. More to come on that soon, but we've found a lot of very interesting new objects in our Solar System!

Update: We are now tracking at least 180 fragments resulting from this event. We expect this number to increase in the coming days. We are actively analyzing the debris cloud to characterize it, identify a potential cause, and estimate the impact. More details to follow.

I'm looking forward to working with Joe on discovering and tracking asteroids that are difficult to see because they are often in the direction of the Sun.

Since discovering 27,500 #asteroid candidates in May, our #AsteroidInstitute team has been hard at work preparing data for future machine learning projects. Our goal? Create open-source tools to map our solar system!🌌☄️🔭Help our team by donating today.bit.ly/3LQzo2r

A Chinese rocket launched 18 satellites for the G60 constellation and broke up in orbit releasing over 700 debris fragments. Unfortunately this debris over the next few years will be making its way downwards through the orbits of ISS and Starlink. LeoLabs
