ComCam is back on Rubin Observatory Simonyi telescope. Initial (engineering) on-sky observations are scheduled for July 2024. Though covering <5% of the area of the main camera, ComCam is still sizable: approximately 40' x 40' field of view spread over 9 CCDs and 144 megapixels.

As more and more satellites are launched, there are more and more "places to hide" in space. So the job of Space Domain Awareness is becoming a question of how fast can we scale.

Update: We are now tracking at least 180 fragments resulting from this event. We expect this number to increase in the coming days. We are actively analyzing the debris cloud to characterize it, identify a potential cause, and estimate the impact. More details to follow.

A Chinese rocket launched 18 satellites for the G60 constellation and broke up in orbit releasing over 700 debris fragments. Unfortunately this debris over the next few years will be making its way downwards through the orbits of ISS and Starlink. LeoLabs

This is a tiny asteroid, but it will be a good lightshow. This asteroid was only just discovered about 8 hours ago.

It would be great to get some video if anybody is up in the Philippines!
