An interesting article by Allison Hartnett (ashartnett on Bsky) & Mohamed Saleh on how colonialism reshaped the power of precolonial domestic elites. Using data on Egypt, it show how the British altered the social structure, making the landed elite more powerful. Open access: cambridge.org/core/services/…

My paper with Allison Hartnett (Allison Hartnett (ashartnett on Bsky)) on colonial redistribution of political power among precolonial domestic elites is finally out at American Political Science Review

Highly recommend this study of colonial redistribution of power from Mohamed Saleh and Allison Hartnett (ashartnett on Bsky). In a previous iteration, it won APSA MENA Politics Section Honorable Mention for best paper. The meticulous use of data also makes it a great piece for a methods course.
