The war on science in the US is already affecting private sector research like AlphaFold. Bears repeating but the private sector builds on top of things created by academic research for the public good. This hurts everyone.

Anthropomorphization of intermediate tokens as reasoning/thinking traces isn't quite a harmless fad, and may be pushing LRM research into questionable directions.. So we decided to put together a more complete argument.. 👇🧵 1/

Today was my phd commencement at MIT. Different speakers told us repeatedly how we did well and ought to go make the world a better place. i guess the current administration holds a different view. what we are robbed of is stability, is the foundation of being able to focus.

ACADEMICS: it is time to get our heads out of our *sses. This is not the moment for personal ambition, why your latest sophisticated widget beats rivals intricate theorem. The scientific franchise is under attack. It is time to defend it to the public. x.com/davidbau/statu…

The correct policy would actually be the opposite — to require these people to stay and work in the US for a minimum of say 5 years. This is the dumbest policy ever from a practical point of view on top of just being morally gross.

This is a short note on my experience as an immigrant and new American. The timeline is this: - 2002: moved from India to attend Grinnell College, Iowa - 2006: started PhD in computer science at Brown University, Rhode Island - 2012: started as a postdoc scholar at Cornell

at observable a few years ago i worked on a bunch of “templates”, which were just normal notebooks, but i guess especially self-consciously written to be forked, which mostly made them more boring and less relatable, since they were contrived instead of ecologically discovered

Thrilled to share that I’ve successfully defended my PhD dissertation and I will be joining MIT as an Assistant Professor starting Fall 2026, with a shared appointment between Sloan and EECS! I will be recruiting PhD students this upcoming cycle. Consider applying to MIT EECS!

the most satisfying takeaway from a phd is that you can solve problems far beyond your capabilities if you're willing to throw yourself at them again and again, over a long period, while staying open to new ideas it's not really about being smart. just curious & persistent

FRIENDS: American science is being decimated by Congress NOW. Your help is needed to fix this! The current DC plan PERMANENTLY slashes NSF, NIH, all science training. Money isn't redirected—it's gone. Please read+share what's happening thevisible.net/posts/004-stre…

“I’m working on a big idea!” But… what is a big idea, really? And are we just telling ourselves that to feel better about not publishing? Or superior than others? Some personal reflections on deep work and big idea: 🔗 ryanyen2.github.io/blog/big-idea/
