As remarkable as this is, it really is the product of the fact that Michigan doesn’t use ranked choice voting or have runoffs. With 8 Black candidates in the MI-13 primary splitting the vote, the one non-Black candidate was able to win with 28.3% of the vote.

Less gerrymandering, more community redistricting! Four states (82 districts and 19% of House seats) already have independent commissions that give power to the people: Arizona, California, Colorado, and Michigan. Let's add Texas!

Worth noting that under the strong anti-gerrymandering in the stalled Freedom to Vote Act, a fair Texas map would have around 17-18 Democratic districts, not the 13 today, and certainly not the new maps 8 such districts. #txlege brennancenter.org/our-work/resea…

This will likely weaken the VRA even more than it already has been over the last number of years. Casually rolling back 60 years of election law

The VRA was signed into law 60 years ago today. In the past decade it has been weakened and soon could be completely dismantled via SCOTUS cases in Louisiana and Alabama. This would only increase the use of partisan-gerrymandering like what is currently happening in Texas.
