Grades 1 & 2 teachers learned about the Math Block schedule at today’s PD. They had opportunities to engage in various components of the Math Block ranging from the Do Now, to the Solve & Share as well as a variety of activities utilizing manipulatives.

Kindergarten students @S8_Belleville in Ms. Rodriguez’s Math class kicked off Day 1 of “Building Thinking Classrooms” (BTC) w/ a focus of finding their whiteboard #’s. Students worked together on a task to draw 5 flowers…some red & some blue. AMAZING discussions & strategies!

Day 2 BTC Launch w/ S8_Belleville Kindergarten students in Ms. Rodriguez’s Math class! The focus was 1 marker; 2 voices and they worked collaboratively on the task of Whose name is longer…you or your partner?

Day 3 BTC Launch w/ Ms. Rodriguez’s @S8_Belleville Kindergarten students. They continued to work on their collaboration skills. First, they listened to a story called “Not a Box” & then completed a task of turning their “box” into an object! They ❤️ BTC and said it’s “AMAZING”!

Day 4 BTC Launch w/ @S8_Belleville students. They listened to a story called, “How Big is Your Brave?” & used their ‘Partner Powers’ to feel brave enough to share their ideas as they collaborated to solve the task of “Next Door Neighbors!” Lots of perseverance w/ this task!

Day 5 of BTC launch w/ @S8_Belleville students. Students listened to a story called “Ten Black Dots”. Using manipulatives (math tools) was the focus to learn how it helps us learn math, but today’s task focused on using a certain # of counters (dots) to recreate an object! #BTC

Ms. Rodriguez’s @S8_Belleville students continue to classify & count objects! They showed different strategies to classify creatures into categories of ‘on the ground’ & ‘NOT on the ground.’ Extension: Draw 2 more creatures, classify & count the new # for each category.

Ms. Rodriguez’s @S8_Belleville students began to explore addition. They used the boards to show/write the # of flowers that were picked in all & to justify using counters & fingers. The extension for the early finishers was to justify using another way: cubes, drawings, etc!
