True. Labels are useful for mainly two things: funding the creation of your music + audience discovery of that music. If you want to be an independent artist you need the capacity to do this without them. Many distros offer label services deals, so it's not as bad as it seems.

Tough all round. Releasing music is just as dicey. ~100k tracks get delivered to DSPs each day worldwide, who currently have ~202M tracks. Nearly 50% aren't played more than 10 times per year. 25% have zero plays. 90% of tracks on DSPs fail to get more than 1000 streams per year.
