Gov Greg Abbott says it's unconstitutional to put vouchers to a statewide vote. But in 2004 an official AG opinion written by Abbott on the Texas Racing Act - which includes a provision for a vote of the people on an issue - he raised no constitutional concerns #TxLege

Over the last day, State Reps have been threatened by Governor Abbott. Told they will face a “legislative blood bath” and all their bills will be vetoed. Told they will face millions of dollars in a primary. All because they wanted to let the people vote on vouchers. #txlege

In 2006, the Texas House added a statewide referendum to a franchise tax bill. *It was added as a floor amendment as is being discussed now for vouchers* It was passed and is law today. There's no reason the same thing would be unconstitutional now #txlege

84 House Republicans JUST voted to allow sexual predators to serve as staff in private school. Paid for by private school vouchers. Because Greg Abbott told them to. #txlege

Gov Greg Abbott can't stop lying about fellow Republicans even after he got his way last night. Being a sore winner is a terrible look. Republicans are going on record now about Abbott's intimidation campaign ahead of last night's vote on school vouchers #txlege

Last night, Rep. @JamesTalarico exposed that Greg Abbott was threatening vetoes and primaries against any Republican that opposed his voucher scam. The Governor called Talarico a liar. But here's what Republican lawmakers are saying: #txlege

I first started working in the Capitol in 2018. Back then, Republicans and Democrats both fought aggressively to fund our public schools. It's chilling how much has changed in 6 years. Today, the urgency is gone. The passion is gone. And our kids are paying the price. #txlege

Gov. Abbott used every tool at his disposal — vetoes, primary threats, and even the president of the United States — to pass funding for 100,000 private school students. Where is he now in fighting for the 5 million kids in public schools? Or do those kids not matter.

Hard truth here in Matthew Yglesias’s space today: “Democrats face a painful truth: their infrastructure is not primarily built to win elections. Instead, it serves entrenched interests that pull the party away from broad-based strategies and toward ideological extremes and

HB 2 is not a historic level of funding (HB 72 from 1984 was $14B in today's dollars). This bill overly complicates an already complex system in order to exert control over districts. #txlege #txed

This “record” new funding is almost $10 Billion below what schools need to reach 2019 spending power and leaves Texas teachers below national average in pay. That’s what happens when you also set the “record” for the most years with no new money for schools, Governor.

For Democrats, Ken Paxton is the best villain. And to win, we need our strongest contrast. As I told the Houston Chronicle: If Democrats want to flip Texas, we’ll need lightning to strike, and @JamesTalarico is our most electrifying leader. houstonchronicle.com/politics/artic…
