When I was depressed & suicidal in 2017, my close male friends would come home to keep me company. They'd do my laundry, my dishes, wash my house and open the curtains for me. None even knew what depression was, but they knew I was down and needed help. Their love lifted me.

On the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina (8/29), I’m reminded of not only the destruction of my home and community, but also that the experience radicalized me. I was 17 at the time. These events below, personally and systemic, shook my worldview.

I wish people would understand that this wasn’t just a natural disaster. The flooding is not like anything that has come before. And even if they get plenty of financial support, etc, that won’t fix the fact that the damage will keep happening. Their problem is our problem.

You know how we have words that have different spellings, and different meanings, and don’t sound exactly alike, but they are so similar that we often confuse them? Ex. ‘forge’, ‘ford’, or ‘shinny’, ‘shimmy’. Is there a name for this, or? 🤔
