The US government is at last considering imposing Leahy sanctions against a unit of the IDF over its history of human rights abuses in the West Bank.

Last year, I interviewed a former member of the unit and asked why this law was never applied to Israel.

Salah Al-Ejaili: 'One reason we pursued this case is so the American people learn about what happened...This is the history of their country. Perhaps if the court rules in our favor it will correct, slightly, this black mark in US history.'theguardian.com/world/ng-inter… Alice Speri

Twenty years after the world first saw photos of detainees tortured while in US custody at Abu Ghraib, one of the thousands of men who were abused there is at long last set to testify in a US federal court.

My latest, and first for Guardian US.

An excellent story from Alice, highlighting the absurdity of the executive's total paralysis when it comes to seeking accountability from Israel.

Fascinated by Blinken's cameo - a striking combination of (apparently) real empathy and absolute determination not to act on it.

On this day, in 2003, an Israeli soldier in Rafah drove a bulldozer over American peace activist Rachel Corrie, crushing her to death. Her family fought for years to get the US govt to do something about it.

Thinking of them & everyone in Rafah today.

After eight years, I was laid off from The Intercept among many brilliant colleagues. I had just cut short my maternity leave to cover the war in Gaza.

Journalism will break your heart but there are so many stories to tell, now more than ever. I'll keep at it, somewhere.

Like 1.3 million Palestinians who have fled there, Aseel Mousa is living through hell in Rafah right now.

Still, she’s documenting what is happening to her fellow Gazans. So humbled to work with her on this heartbreaking dispatch from Rafah.

Interesting development from ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, who (as Alice Speri pointed out in her excellent The Intercept profile) has mostly resisted issuing preventative statements like this up until now

“Even though there are wounded and deceased people right outside the hospital, we are paralyzed, unable to assist them, as the occupation’s snipers and Israeli aircraft target anyone venturing outside the hospital premises.”

The tension between the Palestinian public’s political aspirations and Palestinian forces’ role in undermining them was on display at a security forces base Alice Speri visited in the West Bank city of Jericho last year. theintercept.com/2024/01/24/gaz…

Barry Trachtenberg, a historian of the Holocaust, testified in The CCR case.

'We’re watching the genocide unfold as we speak. And we’re in this incredibly unique position where we can actually intervene to stop it.'
