Thanks to Jody Mason and Gregers Rom Andersen for a really interesting viva. Whilst I'm sad that my PhD is finishing, I couldn't have asked for better supervisors in Jean van den Elsen and Alastair Lawson. Such a good experience.
A new research paper in the journal eLife on the inhibition of #complement C5 by peptides derived from cow #antibodies , and the potential use of these #peptides as anti-inflammatory #therapeutics. Congratulations to Jean van den Elsen and his co-authors! complement.org.uk/publications/

I'm pleased to announce a PhD opportunity University of Bath to study complement C5, a target for inflammatory diseases, using a unique antibody toolkit. This a collaboration with Prof Paul Morgan, Dr Wiola Zelek Cardiff University and Alex Macpherson UCB News cpb-eu-w2.wpmucdn.com/blogs.bristol.… DM for info
The latest paper from our lab in Frontiers - Immunology unveils a novel staphylococcal #complement evasion mechanism which enables the pathogen to harness the ability of dimeric C3d to modulate B-cell activation via a unique structurally stabilising domain swap. frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…
Delighted that our paper has been published in MAbs. We show that the proximity of the termini of bovine knob domains enables transplantation into protein loops, to engineer binding specificity into proteins and antibodies. The Antibody Society Jean van den Elsen tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

DNA is good for information storage. Peptides are better. This Science Magazine article makes a compelling case for peptides encoded small-molecule libraries. A powerful new approach for drug discovery.

As Jean van den Elsen exquisitely summed it up in his historical perspective of the field, "there is complement structural biology before...and after Piet Gros"! What an impactful legacy!
