Enjoying reading Sooner Safer Happier, however, weird to me that Nokia’s downfall is put down to Symbian OS build time, and not for example, Nokia’s inability to imagine a phone without a physical keypad.

This chart I think describes well what happened to Nokia with Symbian. Rather than it’s build time being the problem, Symbian OS was already ten years old, at the end of it life (the blue line below) when new players (iOS, Android) entered the market (the red line below)
