#SB172 and #SB229 bills have received ‘do pass’ recommendations from the #Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee, and must now be heard by the Senate #Judiciary Committee

#SB172 would prohibit local #governments from entering into and renewing contracts with #ICE for civil immigration detention. New Mexico has 3 ICE immigration detention centers that have the capacity to detain up to 2000 people, who are predominantly asylum seekers

No amount of oversight nor inspections have improved documented #medicalneglect, retaliatory use of solitary confinement, #suicide attempts, and #deaths at #ICE facilities. #SB172 can terminate ICE contracts to ensure the health and safety of people within #NewMexico

#SB229 would enable #NewMexican #undocumented youth to be eligible to apply for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) up until the age of 21. #SIJS is a special form of immigration status for #immigrant #youth who have been abused, abandoned or neglected
