We join the nation in being heartbroken and angered by the shooting of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman in Springfield, IL, who had called the police for help. cnn.com/2024/07/22/us/…

Body camera footage shows that Ms. Massey was unarmed when she was killed by Deputy Sean Grayson; Grayson and his colleagues are also heard disparaging Ms. Massey afterwards. Grayson has been fired and charged with multiple crimes, including three counts of first-degree murder.

The heinous nature of this killing—the latest in a long line of white police officers killing unarmed Black people—and the officers' remarks are a reminder of the continuing need for reform of our criminal justice system broadly and policing practices specifically.
