I got back to the States after a 3 week vacation in India, and the US border and customs agent asked me "What is the difference between molecular genetics and just genetics?" honestly out of all the possible questions at US immigration, I wasn't prepared for this one.

3 major problems with NIH funding are: 1) grants are given for work already largely completed (you read right); better would be for past performance & future, high-payoff plans 2) older labs have too many grants & the young fresh ideas labs can’t get funded 3) outdated budgets
