In the nineteenth century, railways were the dominant form of mechanised transport. Vast networks were built in many countries. In 1846, the British Parliament mandated 9,500 miles of railways, of which two thirds were ultimately built. By contrast, HS2 will be 140 miles.

So much of human progress is temperature control. Air conditioning saves lives, reduces stress, boosts productivity, saves the NHS money, incentivises solar infrastructure and is negatively correlated with existing energy demand. A no-brainer for policymakers.

I had no idea that inflation targeting, now used by every major central bank, was born out of a New Zeland policy maker's (FM Roger Douglas) despair rather than an economist or central banker brainy paper. A surprising story in Works in Progress worksinprogress.co/issue/how-one-…

Even more so in London! The wealth/income ceiling for Londoners to no longer get the public transport is significantly higher than in NY. Always amused when my NY peers are like “you take the BUS??” and it’s like yeah, literal millionaires do that here.

When I got tenure, I decided to use it start a new research agenda, studying US science in the 20th century, how it became dominant, what held it back, and what we can do better. Here's the first pub (with Scott Kim).

Texas State Board of Education brought me in today to testify about #math education and curriculum! I was impressed! They brought some students to testify first, representing a range of levels in math, all the way to very high end. Board was compassionate about everyone, and

As Britain enters its third (fourth?) heatwave of the year, here's a short thread on why air conditioning is *actively good* for fighting climate change, and why we should stop banning it from new homes. 🧵

Another excellent blogpost from Andrew Bennett on AI sovereignty. This is what shocked me most. We may go down in history as the country that squandered one of the best AI endowments (DeepMind, global talent, English language, universities, Nobel Prizes) by not building enough.

Sometimes I see or hear something so dismal about the UK that I actually go full circle and become slightly impressed. In a way, it's quite an achievement that the UK remains as prosperous as it does in the context of what effectively amounts to an electricity degrowth policy

As a liver doctor who spent his life’s work treating poor and underserved patients, I can tell you that many patients do not get tested at birth, and it can lead to a debilitating, life-altering condition for the rest of their life. It could have been prevented by a proven safe
