How to do high-rise social housing?

Skyville at Dawson, by Woha.

Each tower is 4 stacked villages of 80 homes, each with access to shared skygardens. The entire roof is a public park with a 300m walking track.

Perfect Toronto emblem: beloved urban tree getting its roots crushed by careless utility contractors (who of course can’t block off any of the car space)

This city sometimes. There’s an interesting display at Metro Hall of the broad strokes of the Island Master Plan. What’s absent? *Any* discussion at all of a fixed link. If you asked Torontonians what the biggest issue currently is, if 80% if didn’t say “bridge”, I’d be shocked.

In all the 91 Barton nonsense earlier this week, I wonder why Toronto Laneway Houses and Garden Suites is grave dancing? Isn't this all about getting more laneway houses, garden suites, and missing middle projects built? What does this achieve?

91 Barton this am. It sits in the middle of a nghd that could not be built today if we insisted on all of the current processes of zoning, minor variance review, public input. Oh, and Seaton Village is charming in spite of or b/c of all those non-conformities. 1/x

Senior editor John Lorinc writes: It’s time to talk about the Committee of Adjustment — these tribunals attract the worst kind of NIMBYism and don't belong in a city that needs to fight a housing crisis on every front.
