I get the outrage. I’m enraged. But there’s nothing special about professors. Brutalizing anyone —a department chair, a 5y/o in Gaza, a protesting student, a houseless person— should be met with the same response, the same shock, pain, and anger. These lives are of equal value.

Uh. OSU alum here. Water bottles and blankets were basic necessities for 'Oval Beach' every warm day of the year
As were tents, hammocks, lawn chairs, oval preachers, protesters with giant, medically inaccurate depictions of fetuses....
IT'S A PUBLIC SPACE AT A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY

ASU has now turned on the sprinklers to deter pro-Palestine protesters. Protesters are putting bags and items on top of the sprinklers to stop them from spraying.

It’s utterly shameful that Ohio State, President Carter, and his administration sent police to violently attack completely peaceful demonstrators.

It’s an affront to free speech, First Amendment rights and the mission of higher education. Truly a stain on the institution.

There's a lot to say about the injustices that happened on our campus today. But for now, I want to recenter WHY the organizers were peacefully gathered: financial divestment, academic boycott, financial disclosure, acknowledgement of genocide, an end to targeted policing.

The student protests didn’t happen all of a sudden. They are the culmination of multiple efforts including the long-standing work of Palestinian groups, more recent movements led by undocumented students and Movement 4 Black Lives & the inclusion of diverse histories in curricula. 🧵

So many universities say want students who are independent, critical thinkers and leaders, but then they shy away from and are violent towards the criticality, ingenuity, and independence of student-activists.

I love how white people scream 'I'm a professor,' like that's supposed to make them immune to police brutality

USC went from cancelling their valedictorian’s commencement speech on a made up claim of safety, to canceling all commencement speakers, to canceling commencement altogether—all to prevent the student USC educated on genocide studies from applying her USC education at USC.😑

For many of these professors, they are not new to this...They are true to this...

They have seen multiple student protests for decades. Calling them cowards for not doing what you want them to do is wild.

I don't know who needs to hear this...

The professors I know are not cowards and they are not avoiding the current state of political affairs happening globally. They are protecting themselves from the predatory bullies on their respective campuses.

A Thread...

This is why I think the leftist tendency to dismiss online disability advocacy and activism is dangerous.
For many disabled people, 'showing up' in person isn't possible; that this has to be explained to progressives is depressing.

It's wild that the right devised a whole scheme to lay DEI at the feet of Black women when white women (like with affirmative action) have benefited the most from these programs.

But, they're the most silent. Again.

I respectfully disagree. If you’re trying to cram 16 weeks worth of content into 10 weeks, of course that’s a recipe for burn out.

That’s not what I’m proposing.

Less content and more emphasis on other aspects that contribute to learning.

We’re teaching students, not content.
