In Morganton, Rahul Gupta joined UNCHealthBlueRidge for a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new six-story patient tower, which features a new Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, and specialty rooms for substance use and behavioral health care.

Today, Rahul Gupta convened faith leaders in Charlotte to discuss the critical role they play in the Biden-Harris Administration’s whole-of-society efforts to address the nation’s overdose epidemic and save lives.

It was a pleasure to join Former Mecklenburg Health Director Gibbie Harris at Northeastern Charlotte yesterday to highlight actions the Biden-Harris Administration is taking to reduce overdoses, build a more recovery-ready nation, and support rural communities in North Carolina.

This Overdose Awareness Week, we recognize the devastating toll the opioid crisis has taken on communities across the country. Under President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris's leadership, we will continue working to disrupt the supply of illicit fentanyl and expand access to life-saving treatment.

The Biden-Harris Administration has made expanding access to opioid overdose reversal medications, like naloxone, a key priority of President Biden’ Unity Agenda. Today, we hosted a training to educate staff about this life-saving tool and ensure they know how to use it.

During Overdose Awareness Week, we mourn those we have lost, acknowledge the devastating toll the overdose epidemic has taken across our country, reflect on the progress we have made, and recommit to the work ahead to save lives.

My Administration has worked to fight the stigma that surrounds substance use disorder and overdose so folks feel comfortable reaching out for help. And now, naloxone – the life-saving medication that reverses the effects of opioids – is available for over-the-counter purchase.

The Biden-Harris Administration has made beating the opioid epidemic a top priority. During Overdose Awareness Week, we reflect on the progress we’ve made in protecting American lives – and recommit ourselves to the work ahead to save lives from this crisis.
