#OnThisDay September 16, 1940 the keel of Battleship New Jersey was laid at the Philadelphia Naval Yard. Charles Edison, then the former Secretary of the Navy, welded the first two keel plates together. You can see here the construction of the ship months later in January 1941.

In order for Battleship New Jersey to safely transit under the Walt Whitman Bridge, we removed the mast and radar array. We will be reattaching these pieces as well as adding a replica SPQ9 dome onto the ship! The ship will be closed October 1-3 in order to do this. #DryDockNJ

Did you know Battleship New Jersey was the only battleship to have ever had swimming pools? In 1968, the WWII-era 40mm anti-aircraft guns were removed because they couldn’t keep up with the more modern jets, so Captain Snyder had pools installed in the remaining gun tubs.
