I talk about them all the time, the Richie Gray shield, heavy roll bag, grapple bag. You can explain to friends but you really do have to feel them to fully understand

Nobody loves staying on feet as much as football coaches but crash mats seem to be acceptable. Nice little goalline/short yardage setup. Mat also acts as target to keep leg drive and “break the plane” *key is bag holder should provide downward pressure.

When it comes to new scheme we always talk about the players. But don’t forget the play caller getting used to new players. Strengths/weakness but also likes/dislikes, comfort and where/what they have most confidence in - especially in big moments. Both grow over the weeks

Mat tackles don’t have to be line up tight and bang. Can easily add a sport specific movement pattern - FB coaches envision this as a sweep or low drop. Two mats (yes, for the lucky teams) also allow for a cut and change of line by carrier = not predetermined shoulder.

When you watch, or play against South Africa, you know what you going to get. As a 🏈 coach, notice these are 4 different individuals, be fun to gameplan when to a player your whole team does this to win the go forward/fall forward and the YAC.

I’ve heard this story many times but still think the mindset is so important and my favorite lesson from the leadership thread.

One my favorite parts of the ⁦Riddell Sports⁩ ⁦Richie Gray⁩ bags is the depth and density lets you go full hit. Even on a lower body tackle -which I often stand in and hold for- really reduces worry about Charlie horse and can practice the skill.

Some of the best small-space, work through the shrapnel play you will see. Further from the ball the biggest challenge is space. Closer to the ball it’s obstructions plus traffic (of giant humans who usually want to mangle you).

I know, not a great tackle attempt with no arms but… The ability to “ride” a hit or a tackle, to kinda let it push you wide while continuing to run is a great contact skill that leads to a ton of YAC.
