An aspect of the critiques to our approach to plant behavior is open rudeness. Accusations of fantasising, distorting, or deceiving. Was this common currency in the 80s/90s? I don't know, but it looks awful. We talk about this and actual critiques here: doi.org/10.1007/s00709…
