If I wanted to revive a "dead franchise", I wouldn't do it for glory and wanting the credit for "reviving" it. I would want to do it for fun and get others to see what I liked in the series.... and maybe give justice to a few characters who got shafted and deserved better.

This is a lie. Most artists working today are self-taught, whether they're freelancing or employed full-time with a studio. Your portfolio is what matters most. Academic qualification is very low on the list of priorities for most art directors when they're hiring.
