Does inherent tastiness or 'hedonic' responses to food drive intake?

Or do metabolic effects of food determine how rewarding it is?

Classic study from M Friedman's lab suggests the latter.

Rats adapted to high fat diet absorb more fat and prefer it more journals.physiology.org/doi/abs/10.115…

Low-carb diets improve many metabolic syndrome risk factors

What about LDL-chol? Turns out weight is a key factor

LDLc ⬆️ in those with low BMI
LDLc ⬇️ in those with high BMI

So ... no special concern, it seems, for LDLc on low-carb for obesity/diabetes

Another example of obesity that can develop without increased food intake (hyperphagia occurs later)

This is more the rule than exception in animal models

And yet, the possibility that “overeating” doesn’t “cause” obesity is still considered preposterous
