🔥 Accessibility hot take: A lot of accessibility challenges arise when we take multiple components and try to make them work as one. Think the autocomplete and tooltip. Advice Karl Groves (he/him) has shared sticks with me: Ask: What is this thing and what does it do?

In this case, the "specific technologies" (overlays) need "relevant information" included (they don't work, cause harm). Not excluding corporations at the expense of those technologies excluding who you and your members serve is a mission gone awry.

The WordPress project is lucky to have Carolina contributing to it. Women in tech experience misogyny daily. If you questioned the idea of a release led by a team of women and binary folks (WP 5.6) remember that we need to fight for our right to seat at the table all the time.

IMHO accessibility advocates should not blame and shame and make people feel uncomfortable or inadequate. Make people curious and enthusiastic about improving their work. Make people wanting to learn more instead of putting them into defence mode. That's a win for everyone.

I wrote a hopefully helpful post on designing with an accessibility-first mindset. Yes, it has a click-bait headline. 🙃 davidakennedy.com/blog/accessibl…

@FrankElavsky 👋 The alt text on the recent NASA Webb Telescope first images posts were written by a small team at STScI, including myself and Timothy Rhue II. It was a collaboration between SMEs, scientists who focus on outreach, education specialists, and professional science writers.

If you're familiar with alt text, you know that an image really is worth 1000 characters. A special team at Space Telescope Science Institute brought you the now iconic descriptions of Webb's first full-color images and data. ⤵️

It's really frustrating when you're trying to include disabled folks on your team in all your processes, but can't because accessible software doesn't exist. You spend so much time crafting workarounds. And people with disabilities do this daily.
