Treasury bells the cat on Labor’s economic failures: — confirming the Budget is on an unsustainable trajectory; — saying Labor will fall far short of its housing target.

80% of jobs growth in the past two years has been in the non-market sector, fuelled by record government spending. This explains why our productivity performance is so bad, back to 2016 levels. High government spending is crowding out the private sector. afr.com/policy/economy…

This proposal has considerable merit. Card surcharges are becoming ubiquitous in Australia, and in a way that does not reflect the true cost of providing the service. Small business and consumers are paying more than they should.

At the government’s upcoming “productivity summit”, trade unions have been gifted 4 out of 24 seats. Amongst unions’ list of demands: ➡️ Abolish the Productivity Commission ➡️ Give unions a veto over use of AI in the workplace ➡️ A shorter working week. Hardly augurs well.

Yesterday Anthony Albanese claimed Hamas would be “totally opposed” to his decision to unilaterally recognise a Palestinian state (absent the attributes of statehood or a negotiated outcome which could underpin peace). Today Hamas came out and welcomed his decision.

Today is a test on tax for the Treasurer. This govt has added $100b to the national debt. We’ll hit $1t in debt this year and $1.2t by the next election. And the Treasurer is planning 11 deficits in a row. Will he use this roundtable to stop the spending spree or to hike taxes?
