In all seriousness, he’s probably going to spend the time hyping the success of No Labels’ voter registration efforts in Arizona — and, uh, continue to tease a run for the White House.

I am saying this as a historically unabashed fan of U2: That song and video for “Atomic City” made me feel — simultaneously — like they were, uh, trying so damn hard…and, well, not trying at all. I really don’t know how else to articulate it, but: It’s bad.

What would be Day 1 of a partial government shutdown (Sunday) is also Jimmy Carter’s 99th birthday. All I’m saying is, I’m game for a busy news cycle this weekend, but let’s not get too crazy.

As a person who expects 30 more years of working in news ahead of him, I have to say this instrumental runs in my head a lot (though, I affix no exact nation-state or conflict to it): youtube.com/watch?v=u4zhva…

I volunteered last week to work a reporting shift today. It was a hell of a weekend and am completely spent. But I am glad to flex some other muscles (and, well, holiday pay): npr.org/2023/10/09/120…

So, in a strange turn of events, I checked my vacation time accruals and it looked like I’d been shorted some time off. As it turned out, I was owed nearly 100 hours of vacation time. It’s been fixed. This is one of my greatest achievements/surprises in my working life.

I know it’s not my beat anymore, and I rarely spend time on Twitter as it is, but think of all the effort Rep. Alex Mooney has put in over the past few years to lose out on this:

America, as democracy remains in peril: “We don’t trust traditional news!” CNN: “Okay, here’s Charles Barkley.”

It’s the once-a-week-or-so scroll and news like this that reinforce my decision to quietly step away from this hell hole.

The certainly isn’t an endorsement by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s a rather read-between-the-lines take from Senator Joe Manchin on the differences between Joe Biden and Donald J. Trump on the border:

For a guy who seemed to be flirting with a White House run — and at the very least saw Harris’ unchallenged ascension as nominee as problematic, Senator Joe Manchin seems to have quite the positive take on Walz:

I have no idea how I missed this story on West Virginia and immigrant labor from Paul Kiernan back in May, but I just came across it doing some poking around on a story I'm working on about Jim Justice and the potential Greenbrier Hotel auction: wsj.com/politics/polic…

Admittedly, I rarely use this platform much anymore. But on a night like tonight, I wanted to take Grok for a spin. This was the first question I asked it and, well:

Sorry for the absence, folks. Social media hasn’t been my thing all that much lately aside from monitoring things for work. Speaking of which, I’ve changed jobs and am no longer working (fully) from home:
