In #Londontario this morning, a Canadian National freight train held up the VIA Rail Canada train, then when the VIA train was about to arrive at the station, it had to sit for another 40 min due to CN signal work. This is no way to run a national train network. VIA needs dedicated tracks. 🚆

It’s been quite a trip - so far. After the long delay leaving London, a collision by another VIA Rail Canada train near Kingston left us stuck at Belleville. A 9-hr trip to Montreal so far & counting. Meanwhile a long Canadian National freight train just passed us, so track must be open!? 😵‍💫

Looking forward to presenting the latest results from NTP and what to expect in the future from the new Canadian Severe Storms Lab. Put it on your calendar :-)

Wow, London is really getting clobbered by this lake-effect snow band. It's going to be locked in place for some time - practically a whiteout in the north part of the city just a short time ago. The 401 is closed east of London as well. Schools also shut down. Enjoy! #RealWinter

The 2024 Canadian tornado season has wrapped up (though there may be several additions based on systematic satellite review). So thought I'd put together all of the counts by year and province/territory - just during the NTP era. Ontario really stands out, but so does Quebec.

To see how much satellite-based detection has influenced tornado counts in Canada during the NTP era, here's the same chart with no satellite-only detection (and only tornadoes over land). Ontario still really stands out, though Quebec counts fall below Saskatchewan and Alberta.

A lot going on this morning! My mesoanalysis - sfc trof from QC thru to Nrn Lwr MI, and a compact thermal low riding along it to the ~E. The hi-res models picked this up - tho slightly different locations/timing. Reminds me a bit of this case from 2013... researchgate.net/publication/31…

The Ontario government has announced a ‘game-changing’ emergency response centre to be built in Toronto’s Etobicoke area and a volunteer Ontario Corps for natural disaster response in the province. Will be interesting to see what kind of impact this has. cbc.ca/news/canada/to…

Here’s Maryland’s governor claiming that stars including those in the Orion constellation are large drones. Clearly many people in the eastern US have never actually looked at the night sky before. This has become a bona fide mass hysteria event - all the way to the top. Crazy,

Ever left #Barrie at night, headed down Hwy 11, and got caught in a blinding lake-effect squall? This song from the new album by #Boreal tells the story of being led home through the storm by an 18-wheel 'Shepherd of the Road'. ❄️A new Canadian classic.❄️ youtube.com/watch?v=FUWpBC…

Climate shocks are creating "unsatisfactory risk" for insurers in the US. Here's a map showing the rate at which insurers are dropping homeowners. And if this hasn't already started in Canada, eventually it will. Read the free-access article here: nytimes.com/interactive/20…
