I'm a parent with 3 kids under 5. I want them to grow up in a neighborhood designed with them in mind. I recently learned of a concept called "the 15-minute city". A city where everyone should have access to essential urban services within a 15-minute walk or bike. /1

The fietsstraat ("bicycle street") is a type of infrastructure that gives cyclists priority over drivers in a mixed traffic environment. They are characterized by red pavement, prominent branding, and traffic calming; making it clear that drivers are guests.

It might be hard, but definitely not impossible to change our streets. We did it before, and we can do it again! ā€”Barbarosseplatz, #Cologne (1900, now and future) (šŸ“¹ by digital gardener Jan Kamensky)

Mobility is also about prioritizing space. This bike path conveys 40,000-50,000 cyclists/day. Had they been driving cars, it would require at least 6-8 lanes (and still be clogged during rush hour). vid Martin

60% of urban trips globally are shorter than 5km. 50% of these trips are travelled by motorised mobility when they could be by active & public transport. Going car-free āœ…Improves air quality āœ…Strengthens community āœ…Boosts sustainable transport āœ…Supports local businesses

So inspiring this. A new city built in traditional style in Guatemala: CayalĆ”. "This is the way forward: friendly & beautiful places built for humans, not machines." This short film is by The Aesthetic City and I really advice you to watch it. Wonderful.

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved transit, not only did it transform the cityā€™s public life & economic success, but the traffic got better. The traffic got BETTER.

Iā€™ve got this working theory that the main reason people love their college years is because itā€™s the only time in their lives they live in a walkable environment.

Traffic is not the problem, its the symptom, the problem is cars! till we stop building car-centric urban infra, there isn't any way out of this! timesnownews.com/bengaluru/bengā€¦

READ THIS: You donā€™t improve city life just by removing something (cars). You do it by putting wonderful things for people where the cars used to be. Read #Osloā€™s ā€œCar-Freeā€ Livability Program (itā€™s not really car-free, but there are a lot fewer of them):Ā  oslo.kommune.no/getfile.php/13ā€¦

Hear me out: a series of elevated cycle tracks that take you through the most congested and densest part of any North American city. (Copenhagen)
