I'm a parent with 3 kids under 5. I want them to grow up in a neighborhood designed with them in mind. I recently learned of a concept called "the 15-minute city". A city where everyone should have access to essential urban services within a 15-minute walk or bike. /1

Move people, not vehicles

The fietsstraat ("bicycle street") is a type of infrastructure that gives cyclists priority over drivers in a mixed traffic environment. They are characterized by red pavement, prominent branding, and traffic calming; making it clear that drivers are guests.

Mobility is also about prioritizing space. This bike path conveys 40,000-50,000 cyclists/day. Had they been driving cars, it would require at least 6-8 lanes (and still be clogged during rush hour). vid Martin

BREAKING: highway expansion doesn't decrease traffic

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved transit, not only did it transform the city’s public life & economic success, but the traffic got better. The traffic got BETTER.

I’ve got this working theory that the main reason people love their college years is because it’s the only time in their lives they live in a walkable environment.
