I bought this old book at the Suffolk seaside today. I found the signature at the front -- 'Constance Wood / Christmas 1940' -- very moving. Such a gentle collection of poems, something so optimistic about the 'Christmas', and yet so much horror was about to unfold in her world.

This is very well put. And for me, this mismatch, between the scale of Britain's problems and the smallness of Labour's response, makes their current approach to tech / AI -- a rare source of optimism and sense of progress -- a little puzzling.

Also note that, for every job type, the majority are either "not engaged" or "actively disengaged". In short, most people do not like their work. Yet discussions of work (and its future) assume the opposite -- that there is strong link between work and meaning / purpose for most.

Chiang's definition of art as "something that results from making a lot of choices" doesn't help us think about the future. Many artworks follow from a few choices (e.g. Duchamp's urinal) and many non-artworks follow from many choices (e.g. a multi-lingual dishwasher manual).

For context, you have to go from *1997 to 2024* to get this amount of productivity growth (26.08%) across the UK economy as a whole. We must take these technologies more seriously than we are at present.
