Melbourne's buses - poor frequency in some areas, non-existent in others. (And it's much the same in regional Victoria)

If you want proof that two City Loop tunnels reversing direction is confusing, here it is: the government's response is wrong. It's the Burnley and Northern Loop tunnels that swap at lunchtime weekdays. The Caulfield Loop runs anti-clockwise at all times.

The bus upgrades in growth areas announced last week are very welcome, and a good start in providing more transport options for locals. Continued investment in bus services is vital.

🎂🚉 Happy 19th birthday to Marshall station, opened 26th April 2005.

It's good to see the second platform nearing completion - this will allow more frequent train services, which will be very welcome.

This is a reminder of the serious consequences when motorists illegally overtake trams at stops. More needs to be done to protect passengers: signage, CCTV, education and enforcement of the laws, accessible platform stops to prevent vehicles speeding past. abc.net.au/news/2024-04-2…

🚉🎂Happy 12th birthday to South Morang station, opened 22nd April 2012 - the terminus of the line until extended in 2018.

This line runs only every 20-40 minutes outside peak - more train services and connecting bus services are needed to make it competitive with car travel.

It’s great that there’s investment in growing the V/Line fleet, but after 20 years of making VLocities, the government should be considering a new design.

Decades spent making it easier to drive and hard to get around without a car has backfired, making it worse for everyone.

The main barrier to more people catching public transport is the service quality, not the fares. PT needs to be affordable, but it also has to be more convenient: frequent, reliable, fast, and well connected.

To make the most of the investment, and make public transport a viable choice for more trips, the govt needs to commit to run all Metro lines frequently all day, every day.
Anything less is a missed opportunity.

🚉🎂 Happy 140th birthday to Melton station, opened on this day in 1884.
The station is set for a revamp, but the government really needs to commit to electrification, to add capacity and more regular services to this line to western Melb, and to help speed up Ballarat trains.

More accurate real-time information is very useful. Even better is a public transport service that is reliable and frequent enough that you never have to wait long at the stop. Often overcrowded trams every 20-30 minutes in the evenings don't cut it. theage.com.au/politics/victo…

Call to heritage list PT timetables

'By granting heritage protection to public transport timetables, the traditional experience of a long wait for a train after dark, or missing the last bus home can continue to enrich us for many generations to come.'
