A memory: Once I was disconsolate after a dispiriting day at work. My middle child sensed my sorrow, drew near, and said, "Don't be sad, Daddy. Jesus loves you." It was the right word; she was four.

On the beach, I find myself staring at a guy's arm, wondering about a poorly executed tattoo: "Is that a rose? Or a tiger eating a rabbit?" I'm not fond of tattoos, but if you go for it, get one great one, not three sloppy ones.

Augustine, strikingly, said, “even the sins of the saints advance their salvation." That is, God makes use of all evils, even our sins, for his purpose, so that we shall one day “be conformed to the image” of Jesus.

This is inappropriate for a tweet, but... For pastors and all academic types, check the online Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy if you need a 10-40 page overview of a major philosophical theme or social/economic movement. A terrific resource.

At the 1/3 mark in writing a commentary on Romans, I found this daunting nugget: The great Augustine started a commentary on Romans and quit after just seven verses, because the task was too difficult.

Czeslaw Milosz, contra Marx says nihilism is the true opium, for it offers “the huge solace of thinking that for our betrayals, greed, cowardice, murders we are not going to be judged.” People “prefer nothing to religion... to pretend they don’t know what their hands are doing.”

New blog post from dan doriani on a concept of employment and authority that's grounded in Scripture rather than culture, and learning that concept by following in Jesus' steps. faithandworkstl.org/blog/how-to-de…

A pastor once said “If you want to know what the Lord is saying to the church today, read the parts of your Bible that aren’t underlined and the teachings you don’t want to revisit."

Pastors if you move services online, have it at church. Use a podium and gather a few people. It's almost impossible to speak well to an empty room. Ask Colbert. 2nd, think twice before announcing the end of public worship. It may be easier to stay open than to reopen.

Tolerance isn't a lack of exclusive beliefs. Everyone has exclusive beliefs--we all think we are right about important things and the world would be better if others agreed. Tolerance is whether your beliefs lead you to treat those disagreeing with kindness, respect, humility.

Language counts. It frames our thinking. If obstetrician is life affirming, a first step is to tell the mother "You are having a baby! rather than “you’re pregnant.” Whatever the circumstances, we can offer an apt word of blessing, then add, in the right way, "How can I help?"

A believer’s first task is not to find a calling but to begin to find begin to himself or herself in the callings he or she already has – in God’s family, in the home, at the work we already do.
