Where are the subject matter experts with Witkoff? Putin, the KGB officer, is laughing. Meanwhile the instability at the Pentagon is not helping project strength during these delicate negotiations. There is still no confirmed NSA (Cyber Command) director after Defense Secretary

📺A meeting with President Trump is good optics for Putin. But another driver behind Russia’s desire for a meeting with the U.S. is President Trump’s propensity to “give away goodies,” said Dan Baer yesterday on NewsNation, with Connell McShane.

"Trump's folly can be Europe's gain, and bold moves by European leaders could make American talent part of a European competitive edge in the coming decades." Excellent new piece from Dan Baer in Foreign Policy foreignpolicy.com/2025/05/13/tru…

A meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin could be constructive, but only if Trump is willing to stand up to Putin. That may not be the case, says Dan Baer on NewsNation with Connell McShane⬇️

📺 President Trump still has power in the Ukraine-Russia war, says Dan Baer on NewsNation. Whether he’s inclined to use it to push for a ceasefire and stop the war is another question.

These days I've had my doubts about the arc of the moral universe... but Ukrainian special operations definitely bends toward justice.

Trump"s readout of his call w Putin is deeply sad. There was a time when a POTUS would have heard the Russian dictator say "I'm going to further attack my victim" and responded "You better not." Instead Trump behaves as Putin's PR flak and reports it out sympathetically.

I admit "destroying state capacity" doesn't work as a critique of DOGE and other Trump actions w most Americans. But the fact that we're facing a spike in terror / homeland violent threats from Iran and the Admin has put a 22 year old in charge of terror prevention at DHS might.

POTUS's attacks on the media for (correctly) stating that it's impossible to confirm his claims that Iran's nuclear program has been destroyed send a dangerous message to U.S. intelligence officers-- when you know POTUS doesn't want evidence, you're risking a lot if you find it.

look forward to joining Connell McShane at 5:50pm on NewsNation to discuss the Trump/Putin phone call and the decision to shut down U.S. supply of critical defensive capabilities to Ukraine.

The Chinese would pay a lot for F35s and advanced US military technology, too. Regardless of whether you think Nvidia should be able to sell H20s in China, charging a fee in exchange for relaxing national security export controls is a terrible precedent. ft.com/content/cd1a07…
