Do you have any idea how much police misconduct would come to light if more cases culminated in jury trials rather than guilty pleas? The correct answer is no—none whatsoever. And that alone is a powerful argument against our current system of plea-driven mass adjudication.

So here’s what people don’t know about public defenders. We do so much more than what you see in the courtroom. We see clients in the jails, languishing because they are too poor to afford bail. Poverty. That’s it. That’s why they’re there.

Great thread. It’s so telling that Procarceral Twitter and its ilk will claim every conceivable benefit from more policing, no matter how speculative or unquantifiable. But when it comes to difficult-to-quantify COSTS like these, they just shrug them right off the balance sheet.

While incarcerated, many of my so called friends abandoned me. Now that I am home and doing good, they are appearing out of the woodwork. What should I tell them?
