Alexandre Cabanel—who was born today in 1823—exhibited “The Death of Moses” at the 1852 Paris Salon. The reviews were mixed. Edmond and Jules Goncourt didn’t like the bold colors. But Theophile Gautier was impressed saying it follows those of Michelangelo and Raphael.
